Electronic ignition
-Check the batteries in the handheld remote and the receiver. Most of the time the receiver is located in the fireplace
-Is there power to the fireplace? Either house voltage or battery powered
-Is the gas turned on?
Standing Pilot
-Is the pilot light on?
-Turn on the switch/thermostat/remote
-Does your fireplace have a thermopile(powepile) and a thermocouple? If the pilot light stays lit it is very likely your thermocouple. If the pilot light does not stay lit, it is most likely your thermocouple. Worst case scenario the gas valve needs replacing
Others things to look for
-Flame colour. If your flame is too orange, It is not getting enough air. The shutter needs to be adjusted or your glass will turn black
-Carbon monoxide. If your have a fireplace please install a carbon monoxide detector
-Glass. Over time a film will develop on your glass. The glass should be cleaned at least once per year
